<p>High blood pressure or hypertension occurs when there is a high pressure or tension of blood flow in the arteries.</td>

<p> The arteries transport blood from a pumping heart to the rest of the body. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80. Blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called &quot;<strong>pre-hypertension</strong>&quot;, and blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered <strong>high blood pressure</strong>. The <strong>top number</strong> is called <strong>systolic</strong> blood pressure. This number represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood into them. The bottom number is called <strong>diastolic</strong> pressure, which represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes following the contraction.</p>
<p>An elevation of either systolic or diastolic blood pressure increases the risk of developing <strong>heart disease</strong>, <strong>kidney disease</strong>, <strong>hardening of the arteries</strong> (atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis), <strong>eye damage</strong>, and <strong>stroke</strong> (brain damage).</p>
<p>Many people seem to think that salt or sodium is the primary cause of high blood pressure but truth be told, this has only been shown to be relevant in &quot;salt sensitive&quot; people, which is equal to about 10% of the population being affected by the condition.</p>
<p><strong>So what is causing the elevation in the other 90%?</strong> <br />Well, <strong>mineral deficiencies</strong> elevate blood pressure more than anything else. So logically, the first step one should take in an attempt to lower or regulate blood pressure is to prevent deficiencies. The most effective way to do so is by supplementing. </p>
<p>Studies have shown both <strong>magnesium</strong> and <strong>calcium</strong> to <strong>lower</strong> high blood pressure. I recommend taking a combination of 500 mg of calcium and 250 mg of magnesium twice daily.</p>
<p>Since the middle ages, <strong>hawthorn berries</strong> have been used to support the heart and normalize cardiovascular functions. Taking 250 mg of hawthorn three times daily is another great alternative for lowering high blood pressure because it is rich in bioflavonoids, which relax and dilate the arteries.</p>
<p>These compounds contain powerful <strong>antioxidants</strong>, which help increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. The result is that when it comes to circulating the blood, the heart has less work. This in-turn reduces blood pressure and stress to the heart muscle. The bioflavonoid substances also improve blood flow to other areas of the body and strengthen the walls of blood vessels. </p>
<p> Components in hawthorn have also been shown to lower cholesterol, and the amount of plaque in arteries.</p>
<p>I also recommend taking 2-3 grams of vitamin c daily. Vitamin C aids the body in the production of a basic component of connective tissues called collagen. <strong>Collagen</strong> is a key structural component in gums, bones and most importantly blood vessel walls. Aside from that, Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant, which helps rid the body of free radicals.</p>
<p>As always, a proper diet and cardiovascular exercise doesn’t hurt either.</p>

<p>Whether you are diabetic or not the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) should be something to be concerned about. The kind of food you eat can have a profound impact on your health today and tomorrow.</p>

<p>Simply put the food you eat is converted into glucose. It is the job of the pancreas to produce insulin necessary to move excess glucose away from the bloodstream and into the cells of the body where it is needed for energy. </p>
<p>For many type 2 diabetics the cells have become resistant and do not absorb glucose even when there is plenty of insulin around to do the job. </p>
<p>It is estimated that upwards of a billion people exhibit some form of insulin resistance. </td>

<p> Called syndrome X, their pancreas produce more than enough insulin to move glucose but their cells are showing some form of insulin resistance. That requires the pancreas to produce excess insulin to get blood sugar into the cells. But age and a diet high in processed food is guaranteed to bring on diabetes.</p>
<p>So even if you&#8217;re not diabetic you should still pay attention to the terms <strong>Glycemic index</strong> and <strong>Glycemic load</strong>. </p>
<p>So what is GI, GL and why should you care?</p>
<p>The Glycemic Index is a measure of how fast the food you eat is converted into blood sugar.</p>
<p>GL is a measure of the amount of food consumed to produce large levels of glucose. Taken another way, you can raise your blood sugar by simply eating more food, even though it may have a low value on the GI. </p>
<p><strong>Highly processed</strong> and <strong>refined foods </strong>such as white bread, sugary breakfast cereals, cookies and cakes <strong>rank high </strong>on the <strong>glycemic index</strong>. High GI foods lead to high spikes in blood sugar and it is those high spikes and a slow decline that can lead to damage to the heart and kidneys and other vital organs of the body.</p>
<p> <strong>High fiber foods</strong>, on the other hand, lead to a slower rise in glucose. The pancreas does not need to produce massive amounts of insulin to get rid of excess sugar. <strong>Fruits</strong>, <strong>vegetables</strong>, <strong>nuts</strong> and <strong>whole wheat breads</strong> rank low on the scale and are healthier alternatives to high glycemic foods.</p>
<p>Watermelon, for example, has a high GI. So avoiding it may sound like a good idea but watermelon has only 6 grams of carbohydrates in half a cup. This is where the GL comes in. 2 slices of watermelon will not significantly create a rise in blood sugar. GL takes into account the amount of calories consumed. Along with GI you have a good standard to determine which foods are best and which you need to avoid.</p>
<p>A GL rating of 20 or more is considered high, 11 to 19 in the medium range.</p>
<p>A slice of whole wheat bread has a GI of 69 which measures in the medium to high range, but it&#8217;s GL is only 9.6 for that one slice.</p>
<p>Take a look at the GI for a can of any soft drink. The GI is 68 and the GL is 34. Clearly that one can is high on both scales.</p>
<p>Since most of the food you eat likely ranks high on both GI and GL it makes sense to replace them with high fiber foods that won&#8217;t spike your blood sugar.</p>

<p>The more reasons you have the more you will be motivated. Here are some good reasons, you can use these and add anymore you can think of. Make copies of your list and pin them up in different rooms in your house.</p>
<p>The major reason for losing weight is your health. However don&#8217;t just think that you want to be healthier. You need to be specific. When you lose weight you significantly reduce the risk of various diseases such as <strong>diabetes</strong>, <strong>high blood pressure</strong>, <strong>bone disorders</strong>, <strong>joint problems</strong>,<strong> strokes</strong>, <strong>heart attacks</strong>, and <strong>various cancers</strong>. Your chances of living longer are significantly increased.</p>
<p>Try to think what your life would be like if one or more of those diseases entered your life. Do something about it now before it is too late because it is only a question of when something happens, if you don&#8217;t.</p>
<p>The next reason for losing weight is how it will affect your life on a daily basis. You will start to have more energy. Carrying excessive weight is a drain on you and your body. It makes you tired more quickly leaving you feeling lethargic and making it difficult to do everyday tasks.</p>
<p>On top of this you will feel better about yourself. When you don&#8217;t feel rundown and tired you feel happier. This is good not only for you but for people around you. Nobody wants to be around someone who feels tired and grumpy all the time.</p>
<p>A further reason to lose weight is that it makes you look good. No matter what anyone says, everyone wants to look good and be noticed. When you are aware that people notice you in a positive way it raises your confidence and self esteem.</p>
<p>You feel so much better about yourself when you know you are healthy and fit and know that others are also seeing you in the same way. Unfortunately the opposite is also true. When you don&#8217;t feel good about yourself your self confidence and self esteem can drop and make you feel even worse.</p>

<p>Finally the most important step, which is to commit yourself to follow your plan day after day, and week after week, and the results that you desire will come. </p>
