Article On Home Exercise Bike
By Mark Sejnowski

A home exercise bike is a great source for: cardiovascular workout, trimming a few pounds, all over toning, along with maintaining a healthy weight.

Growing up you never thought of a Schwinn bike in those terms.

The Schwinn banana seat "sting ray" was more of a upright Airdyne Bike but you could chop it out and have more of the Recumbent Exercise Bike feel.

Back then you didn't care about how many calories you burned or having an LCD readout to tell you your pulse, interval time, RPM's or speed.

On your Schwinn the weather didn't even matter, rain or shine you were up and gone.

Back then all we cared about was riding as fast as you could go to meet your friends, to play at the park, go to the mall, etc.

Well times have changed, as we get older we look for ways to stay healthy and keep in shape. Schwinn has recreated that feeling of when you were younger in their Schwinn Exercise Bike lineup!

Why a home exercise bike?

What kind of workout do I get from from an exercise bike?

An exercise bike has been and will always be a popular choice in fitness because it provides an effective workout for users of all fitness levels. The low impact movement involved in operating an exercise bike does not put much stress on your joints and does not involve herky - jerky motions that some other fitness equipment may require.

Riding an exercise bike strengthens major muscle groups to improve back support. Riding an exercise bike strengthens the leg and thigh muscles, including the hamstrings in the back of the thigh While riding the bike, there are two components to the stroke: the push and the pull.

Both stokes are important, pushing down on the pedals requires the use of the quadriceps, while the pull motion works the hamstrings. It is often helpful to picture the foot going in a circle, pushing on the down-stroke and pulling on the up-stroke.

Aerobic exercise on the exercise bikes improves cardiovascular health and circulation It stimulates the capillaries in the muscle, which helps oxygen and nutrients to be more easily delivered to the muscles. In general, aerobic exercise is an excellent pain fighter.

Any form of aerobic increases the body's release of endorphins, a natural pain blocker. Endorphins also serve to help reduce anxiety, stress and depression, all of which are common for people suffering from on going back pain.

Which style is right for you - Upright or Recumbent?

This decision usually depends on your personal preference. We recommend going for a style that is the most comfortable to you. When you are sitting on the exercise bike's seat, you should be able to remain on it for the duration of your full workout.

You should not feel any strain stepping on the exercise bike pedals and should be able to easily reach for the handle. If you are looking for an upright exercise bike , we recommend a Schwinn Airdyne.

However, if you have medical conditions such as lower back pain, mobility or balance issues, the recumbent style exercise bike provides more back support and would be a better choice for you. We would suggest the Schwinn 230 Recumbent.

The Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike is my is my first choice because of the full total body workout. This Exercise Bike has a patented dual action motion that synchronizes the arm and leg motions to simulate your natural motion, and it also features a patented fan wheel technology that increases the wind resistance the harder you pedal.

What I personally like about this Exercise Bike is that by actually pedaling harder the air resistance that allows for a smooth pedaling motion also creates a cool a stream of cool air making a comfortable home workout . You can achieve numerous aerobic benefits with the Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike while watching your favorite TV show or listening to your ipod tunes that pump you up, all in the privacy of your own home(rain or shine).

The Schwinn 230 Recumbent Exercise Bike is like riding a bike with bucket seats, as compared to the Schwinn Airdyne in which you sit in a straight up right position like riding a bike.

This Recumbent exercise bike is just like the title states, the term recumbent means, lying down. Exercising in a recumbent or reclined position allows the user to full ergonomic back support without causing strain on the arms, neck or shoulders.

Again we'd like to stress those who suffer from back pain from time to time may find this more their speed. The anatomically designed recumbent seat not only offers a dual position lumbar support for added comfort but, it also has a micro adjustable fore/aft seat slider that accommodates a variety of body types and sizes.

Whether you like the Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike with the upright more traditional feel, or the Schwinn 230 Recumbent with the laid back bucket seat feel, you won't go wrong with Schwinn!
